If you have a severely decayed, damaged, or infected tooth, a root canal at Walden Dental in Walden, NY, can help save it. Whether you’re searching for “root canals near me,” wondering “do root canals hurt,” or need fast, compassionate care, our experienced team is here to help.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure to remove infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of a tooth. Once the pulp is removed, the space is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a filling material. A crown is often placed afterward to protect and strengthen the tooth.

Common reasons for root canals include:

  • Deep decay reaching the tooth pulp
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Abscesses or severe infection
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth

Do Root Canals Hurt?

Root canal treatment is renowned for being painful, but modern techniques make it virtually painless. Most patients report that having a root canal feels similar to getting a filling. We use local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.

Do root canals hurt after treatment?

You may feel mild soreness or sensitivity for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

How Long Do Root Canals Take?

A typical root canal appointment takes 60 to 90 minutes. More complex cases or molars with multiple canals may require an additional visit.

How long do root canals last?

A root canal-treated tooth can last 10 to 20 years or longer with proper care.

Are Root Canals Safe?

Yes. Despite outdated myths like “do root canals cause cancer” or “are root canals dangerous,” this procedure is highly safe and supported by decades of dental research. There is no scientific evidence linking root canals to cancer or other systemic health problems.

How Much Do Root Canals Cost in Walden, NY?

At Walden Dental, we provide transparent pricing and flexible options.

  • Average cost per tooth: $700 to $1,500 (depends on tooth location and complexity)
  • With insurance: You may pay significantly less if the procedure is medically necessary. We work with most major insurance plans and offer financing for uninsured patients.

Does insurance cover root canals?

Yes, many dental insurance plans partially or fully cover root canals, especially when medically required.

Are You a Candidate for a Root Canal?

You may need a root canal if you have:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Swelling around the gums
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums (possible abscess)

We use digital X-rays and thorough exams to diagnose and confirm the need for root canal therapy.

FAQs About Root Canals

Do root canals hurt?

Modern root canal treatments are typically no more uncomfortable than a regular dental filling. Local anesthesia ensures the area is numb, and most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure. Post-treatment discomfort is usually mild and temporary, easily managed with over-the-counter medications.

How much do root canals cost?

Root canal pricing can vary based on the tooth involved (front vs. molar), the complexity of the case, and whether a crown is needed. On average, costs range from $700 to $1,500 per tooth. Many dental insurance plans cover part or all of the price if the treatment is deemed medically necessary. We’ll provide an exact estimate after your consultation.

Are root canals bad for you?

Not. Root canals are designed to eliminate infection and save your natural tooth. Misinformation online has circulated myths linking root canals to systemic diseases, but no scientific evidence supports these claims. The American Dental Association and other health authorities consider root canals safe and effective.

How long do root canals last?

When appropriately performed and followed by good oral hygiene, a root canal-treated tooth can last 10 to 20 years—or even a lifetime. Longevity depends on factors like the tooth’s location, the type of crown used, and whether you grind your teeth or have untreated dental issues.

What kind of dentist does root canals?

General dentists can perform most root canal procedures. However, for complex cases, re-treatments, or molars with intricate anatomy, you may be referred to an endodontist—a specialist in root canal therapy. At Walden Dental, we can manage most cases in-house and will coordinate referrals when needed to ensure the best care.

Why do people need root canals?

People typically need root canals when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, trauma, or repeated dental work. A root canal removes the damaged tissue, helping you avoid tooth loss and stop pain or swelling caused by infection.

Can dental insurance cover root canals fully?

Some dental insurance plans do cover the entire cost of root canal therapy, especially if it is medically necessary. Others may cover 50–80% of the procedure. The extent of coverage also depends on your deductible and plan details. Our front desk team can review your benefits and help maximize your insurance savings.

The best dentist around! This is coming from someone with extremely high anxiety with any dental care. My husband and I have been patients there for a year. Due to my anxiety, I had not been to the dentist in 5 years, but one day a filling fell out. I left a voicemail for the office that evening, and the next morning they called me and had me come in. I was so scared, stressed and emotional and the entire staff showed me such kindness and compassion. Dr. Sayeed calmly and patiently worked with my anxiety. He has excellent bedside manners, and is highly skilled at his profession.
It is not often that you find this kind of care, despite being a business, patient care seems to come first. A shout out to Sumayra too, who is quick to return calls and is so reassuring!

BEST DENTIST ON THIS SIDE OF THE BRIDGE, got me booked, looked at, and my problems sorted after the direct competition made it worse, didnt listen to me, went in for a root canal and several fillings got all but the extractions i needed done asap and the dentist refused to work on me while i was in pain so he was very thorough about numbing me.
Would and do recommend to everyone friends, family and anyone i meet. - Mr tucen

I can't say enough about Walden Dental. The girls up front are so helpful, understanding and accommodating! Dr. B is wonderful! I have a lot of health issues and she has been so amazing to work around what I need specifically for my appointments. She is a literal life safer. I just started coming here and already recommended the practice to multiple people. Especially friends or family I know that need dental work and are concerned about going to the dentist. A true gem of a find!! You're definitely in good hands and great care here! ❤️

If you’re in the Hudson valley and are exhausted by the American dental system or just want a dental staff that cares about your well being as a person, look into Walden Dental.

I had gone through Dentaquest’s provider portal and after visiting 7 other offices (not exaggerating), Walden was picked for the long term dental care of my family members.

Competent, transparent, thorough, they keep informed about procedure and how they plan on approaching my insurance to maximize my health to cost ratio.
They almost make the American health and dental care system bearable.

A true HIDDEN GEM! This is the best dental office we've ever used! Dr and staff very professional and give the best dental care and examination we've ever received. My hubby hates dental visits and was extremely happy with his care at Walden Dental. They are gentle and no pain added. They do have an open concept type office which was different.
My only negative experience is that they use plug in air fresheners and I'm highly allergic. I hope they take this into consideration for sensitive patients and remove them permanently. They aren't needed as the office is pristine clean. Do not hesitate to switch to them if you're looking for a new dental office. I regret not using them years ago!
